Systems change or Individual change?

సమకాలీన ఉదంతం రేపిన చిన్ని ప్రశ్నను పంచుకోవటంతో మొదలయ్యిందీ చర్చ. 

I felt it deserved a wider audience and  participants and so here it goes.

I thought since buzz was public, I don't need to take permission of participants.

raghavedra bethamcharla - మనమందరమూ ఇలాటి పే.....ద్ద పనులే చెయ్యాలి అని లేదు అనిపిస్తుంది. అసలు మనమందరం మన మన పరుదుల్లో అవినీతి జరక్కుండా చూసుకుంటే చాలు వ్యవస్థ చాలా బాగుపడుతుంది అనుకుంటా. రెడ్ లైట్ దూకినప్పుడు ట్రాఫిక్ పోలిస్కి, మనం ఆస్తులు కొన్నప్పుడు/అమ్మినప్పుడు సగం వైట్లో ఇవ్వటం, టాక్సులు కట్టకపోవటం, పనులు తొందరగా చేయించుకోటానికి ఒక వంద పారేయటం, ఇలాటి చిన్న చిన్నవి చేయకుండా మనముంటూ...మన జీవితలో ఇంకో ఇద్దరు ముగ్గురిని మనలా తయారు చేయగలగటం...ఇది చాలనుకుంటా by geometric progression ఫర్ corruption to be taken out.....and obviously by strengthening hands of people trying to bring in changes in systems....my fav ex is loksatta :-)EditFeb 16

Sri Raghava Kiran Mukku - raghavedra bethamcharla మీరు అంటూంటే గుర్తొచ్చింది... రైలుబళ్ల తత్కాలసేవల పుణ్యమా అని ఈ మధ్యన నేను బాగా చూస్తున్న వ్యవహారం ఇది.

వీథిబాలలు అనుకోవాలేమో వీళ్లని... ఎవరైతే ఏం లెండి. వీళ్లు చేసే పని ఒకటే. ప్రొద్దున్నే నాలుగు అయ్యే సరికల్లా ఒక నలుగుఱో ఐదుగుఱో కలిసి రైల్వే రిజర్వేషన్ కౌంటర్ల దగ్గఱ నించోవటం. ఇందులో ఏముందీ అనుకుంటే మనదే పొఱబాటు. కాస్త ఆలస్యంగా రావటం వల్ల టికెట్ దొఱకదేమో అన్న భయంతోనూ, అంత భయంలోనూ టికెట్ దొఱకటం అత్యవసరం అన్న పరిస్థితిలో ఉన్న వాళ్లతో ఈ పిలకాయలు బేరాలు మొదలుపెడతారు! మొదట నించొన్నందుకు గాను, వారి బదులు వీరు టికెట్ తీసుకుంటారన్నమాట. అలా టికెట్ తీసినందుకు ప్రతిఫలంగా... పండుగలకాలమా కాదా అన్నదాన్నిబట్టి, రైలులో ప్రయాణించే తరగతినిబట్టి, పదో పఱకో పాతికో యాభయ్యో నూఱో ఇన్నూఱో పుచ్చుకుంటారు. ఆవలి వ్యక్తి కొంచెం ఎక్కువ సంతోషపడితే వీరికి ఎక్కువ సంతోషం రాల్తుంది. పైగా వీరి సేవలు అందుకోవటానికి ఒకరికంటె ఎక్కువమంది సిద్ధంగా ఉంటే వీరు బేరాలు మొదలు పెడతారు. ఒక నెల రోజులక్రితం ఇలాంటి బాపతు పిలగాళ్లని కాకినాటలో చూసి హాశ్చర్యపోయాను. ఇదిగో, ఇవాళ కూడా చూసాను బెంగళూరు కృష్ణరాజపురంలో. ఐతే వీరు వీథిబాలలు కాదు... వీథియువకులు! వీథిబాలలు వీథియువకులుగా... వీథివృద్ధులుగా మారటానికి కారణం ఎవరంటారు? ముసుగువేసికొన్న మనమే కదా!

మీరు చెపుతున్న వీధి బాలుర/యువకుల/వృద్ధుల business model నాకు చాలా నచ్చింది :-) I think they should formalise it so that there are no arbitrary charges/arbitrage profits. ఇదొక్కటే.....arbitrary charges ఒకటే నాకందులో అభ్యంతరకరమనిపించింది.

అవును మీరన్నది నిజమే. మనమే వీరిని ప్రోత్సహించేది. ఇంత చెపుతున్నా హైదరాబాద్లో ఉన్న ఒక్క రోజులో మళ్ళీ ఎక్కడ తెలుగు సినిమా చూసే "అదృష్టం" పోతుందో అనుకుని...అదీ వెంకి నాగవల్లికి (మొదటి రోజు కూడా కాదు మరి) ......బ్లాక్లో టికెట్ కొనటం నేను మానలేదు. మొదటి సారి బ్లాక్లో కొన్నా.

But that is enough....with such a huge market of billion people, one or two small corruptions by those billion in a month is more than enough to feed the corrupt system in any country, let alone ours. And we fase these situations daily in India.

Kiran Chakravarthula - As a film reviewer, I had to watch films for the first (morning) show in the main theater on first day several times. Even during that time or before that, I never bought a ticket in black. I had to go to a remote theater in Warasiguda (Suresh?) instead of Sandhya 35 mm for Mahesh Babu'sBobby when I couldn't buy tickets. (No reviewer is supplied tickets usually. Sometimes, when the producers ask for a review, they can arrange a ticket - to be bought, usually - for the reviewer, directly from the distributor.) Once in 2008 though, I had no other choice than to buy a ticket from a black ticketeer. (Even Rs. 10/- tickets - the lowest class - were over, and the theater manager was helpless. I approached the manager and told him that some people were selling for black at the gate. He asked me to get one such fellow, and I did. The manager scolded him and he said he'd leave and he left. The manager was not playing with me, clearly: he explained to me that the police would come and arrest these people if the theater lodges a complaint, but then the legal procedure - which is the only part of the "System" that should change, in this case - only penalizes the black ticketeers by Rs.50/- and puts them in prison for 6 hours. And, they are at the theater again, the manager said.) I asked the manager if he thinks I can buy a ticket from the black ticketeer and use it as an officially bought ticket. The helpless manager was surprised at the question (because no one would have asked him) but answered affirmative. I went to the black ticketeer and told him I am a reviewer and not a crazy fan or something and that I insisted on not buying a ticket in black. Obviously, he said he'd not sell at the face value. I simply said, "Fine, I don't have a choice. But, I am not going away until you sell me the ticket at the face value." and stood by his side with cash in my hand. I did nothing else. In 5 minutes, he sold me the ticket at the face value. - This is the only time in my life I had bought a ticket from a black ticketeer. And, I am going to implement the same if I face the situation again (even taking permission from the manager first).

I apply small quickfixes like this one all the time - buying MRP-labeled products at the said prices anywhere I go - including bus stands and theaters - merely by insisting that they are not "specially packed for" the location like in case of Indian Railways. (I didn't have to buy anything at the airport after this happened. I'd need to see what I can do about it then. And, I don't go to multiplexes often and when I do, I stay away from "concession" stands. I can try to implement the same when I come back to India.)

Now for the irony: After I wantedly make a hue and cry about the over-the-MRP sales and finally buy the product at the MRP, the next person in the line pays over-the-MRP and buys it ...after watching me and hearing me completely.

The System should change??! I don't agree to a bit in blaming the system for what we do, or not do.8:38 pm

I agree only partly. మన ప్రతి ఒక్కరిలో మార్పు రావాలన్నది, అదే అసలయిన సొల్యూషన్ అన్నది నిర్వివాదాంశము. అది ఎలా వస్తుంది అన్నదే ఇక్కడ ప్రశ్న.

నేను ఇక్కడ (UK) లో నాకు కనపడే ప్రతి ప్రగతి సూచకానికీ ఆలోచిస్తాను ఎందుకు ఈ దేశం ఇలా ఉంది, మన దేశం ఎందుకు లేదు అని. Please don't confuse this with belittling my country in comparision. What do I see here? people wait patiently till their turn in a q, people get respected for whatever job they do, there is less chance of corrupting people for small small things, most of the work gets done in a time bound manner (i.e accountability) etc etc etc. (Again understand that I am talking about the +/- 2 Standard deviations in the normal poulation and not the rest....outliers are there in everything)

And then I ask myself, what breed of people are these? are they really superior to us that they have such good morality. Are they really superior to us?

I answer myself, no, they are not superior. No single group of people could be superior to any other group of people, they could be different but not superior and MOST CERTAINLY NOT IN THE SPHERE OF MORALITY. In psychiatry I have not heard of any different id, ego and superego for the europeans and another for asians.

So then why this superiority? Have there been such a drastic enlightenment of the people themselves overnight? When I hear stories of the local government (called council here) sending letters to son in law and mother in law duo asking them to show proof that they are not cohabiting (the poor son in law was eating dinner at ma in laws home and "sleeping" at the elderly lady's house for a week since the daughter was in hospital with difficult labour) just only 40 years back I smile smugly to myself saying no, they have not had enlightenement overnight.

Then what makes them so morally right or "superior" in their behaviour.

My friend, a doctor, requested a bus conductor to let him carry some food articles on the bus journey (I don't know why but apparently on that bus company they are not allowed) saying "I am a doctor, allow me to carry these". You know what was the answer? "సొ వాట్ ఐ అం ఏ బుస్ డ్రైవర్"
That's it.

And do you think that the bus driver in this country, which was once so strictly segregated class wise that an entire era came to be known as representative of class segregation and strict morality(Victorian era) just about 100-200 years ago, has just suddenly, out of the nowhere, had developed such an immense sense of self to say this?

NO, NO, NO

any such large scale change, that too in a relative small time, can only brought about by few ways only.......first by dictators like mao, second by forceful leaders like gandhi. I don't see any such oppressive regimes or direction changing leaders in this country's history. If there were any, I would have heard for sure :-)

The only option left is, careful course and direction setting, by gradual but firm changing of the rudder, by those in command. And that change is brought about by bringing in systems which would prevent the rudder from going back the old way, without the intervention of humans. మామూలు మాటల్లో చెప్పాలంటే సిస్టమ్స్ చేంజ్ అనేదే మనం కోరుకునేంత తొందరగా, మనం కోరుకునెంత పెను మార్పును తీసుకు రాగల ఆప్షన్.

ఈ మార్పు మనం, మనుషులం,సమూలంగా పరివర్తన చెందితే కూడా వస్తుంది. అది సాధ్యం కూడా.
But for the pendulum to swing to that angle, it would be eons of wait.
I don't think we can afford to wait eons.

ఎస్, కాకపొతే అలా మారితేనన్నా బావుంటుందేమో అన్న ఆశ ఉన్న బార్డర్లైన్ మనుషులను మారాలి, మారటం సాధ్యం కూడా అన్న కోరిక ఉన్న మనుషులు తమ భావాలను నిర్భయంగా బయటపెట్టగలగాలి, వారిని మన వైపు లాక్కో గలగాలి. దీనికున్న పెద్ద అవరోధం ఏమిటో తెలుసా మీకు? మనలాటి ఇలాటి భావాలు ఉన్నవారు వాటి గురించి ఎక్కువగా మాట్లాడకపోవటానికి కారణం తెలుసా మీకు? "పోబే పెద్ద షరీఫ్ పోజులు కోడతావు" ఈ వాక్యం. షరీఫ్ గా ఉండటం అన్నంత బూతు పదం ఈ కాలంలో లేదు మరి.

I think this discussion merits a wider audience. lalita garu,sravan gaaru, raaghakiran gaaru, kirangaaru- permission adakkunda ee mana charcha naa blaagulo pettestunnaanu. Hope we get some more discussion there
